Museo de la Cárcova

The Museo de la Cárcova is an art museum in La Boca housing over 700 sculptures across multiple exhibition halls. The building, originally constructed as a municipal stable in 1900, was later adapted to serve educational and artistic purposes.

The museum was founded in 1928 based on a collection of reproductions gathered by painter Ernesto de la Cárcova during his visits to Berlin between 1905 and 1908. This initial collection became the foundation for the educational institution that followed.

The museum displays reproductions of classical sculptures from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Hellenistic world, including a cast of Michelangelo's David. These pieces allow visitors to encounter major artistic traditions and study their forms up close without traveling to distant collections.

The institution is managed by the National University of Arts and offers guided tours in Spanish and English for visitors. The museum also maintains a library accessible to those seeking additional art historical information.

The building originally served as a stable for imported horses at the Port of Buenos Aires before its conversion to an arts institution in 1923. This unlikely transformation shows how a utilitarian port structure became a center for art education.
