The museum was founded in 1965 to preserve buildings that faced demolition across Japan after World War II. The founder moved these structures to this location to save them for future generations.
The museum shows how people lived and worked during the Meiji period, with buildings gathered from different places across Japan. Visitors can see what schools, homes, and businesses looked like and how they functioned back then.
Visitors should plan for at least three hours to explore the extensive grounds and see all the buildings. Comfortable walking shoes are important because the terrain is hilly and spread out.
The museum operates functional steam locomotives and vintage trams that carry visitors across the grounds. These authentic vehicles come from the same era as the buildings and are regularly used for passenger service.
