Rudy's Steakhouse
Rudy's Steakhouse was an American restaurant in downtown Salem located at 350 Chemeketa Street NE. It served large steaks, pork chops, crab cakes, and other traditional dishes, with a banquet hall for gatherings and an attached butcher shop offering fresh meats.
The restaurant opened in 1998 at Salem Golf Club under founder John Rudishauser, then was purchased by Robert Kunke in 2016 who moved it downtown. The operation closed suddenly when the city terminated the lease at the downtown location.
The name "Rudy's" comes from the original owner John Rudishauser, whose informal nickname became the restaurant's identity. The place served as a gathering spot where locals stopped by for family dinners, casual meetups, and special occasions.
The restaurant was centrally located in Salem, making it convenient for locals to visit. The space offered both regular dining and a banquet hall for larger gatherings and events.
The restaurant closed suddenly without warning when employees arrived to find the doors locked and a lease termination notice on the door. The abrupt shutdown left workers without their final paychecks and shocked many regulars who had relied on the place for years.
