Lighthouse Darßer place, Maritime museum and lighthouse complex at Born auf dem Darß, Germany
Lighthouse Darßer Ort is a red-brick structure at the northern tip of the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula along the Baltic Sea coast. Inside, a nature museum displays exhibitions on marine biology and the region's wildlife and coastal ecosystems.
Built between 1847 and 1848, the tower began operation in 1849 to guide ships along this treacherous coastline. After German reunification in 1995, it opened to visitors for the first time in decades.
The name Darßer Ort reflects the maritime heritage of this sandbar landscape shaped by fishing families and seafaring traditions. Today, displays show how residents historically depended on the sea and its resources.
A staircase of 126 steps leads to the observation deck with views of the coastline and surrounding landscape. Summer months offer longer visiting hours, while winter and spring have shorter schedules.
The museum features aquariums showcasing Baltic Sea life and a recreated forest scene with nocturnal animals that visitors rarely find elsewhere. Adjacent wetland biotopes add another layer of discovery beyond the tower itself.
