Devil's Town, Natural rock formation site at Radan Mountain, Serbia
Devil's Town is a natural rock formation in the Radan Mountain area featuring approximately 202 stone pillars that rise to heights of 15 meters, each topped with a larger rock cap. These protective caps prevent erosion of the softer stone beneath, creating the distinctive appearance of narrow shafts supporting broad crowns.
The region gained importance in the 13th century when Serbian rulers brought German miners to extract minerals from underground mines in the area. This early mining activity marked the beginning of human involvement with the site.
Local folklore connects the stone formations to a legend about wedding guests turned to stone, a tale that shapes how people experience and understand this place. Visitors often hear these stories when exploring the formations and walking among them.
The site sits about 30 kilometers from Kursumlija and can be accessed by walking paths, including a long trail that connects to the nearby Prolom Banja thermal springs. Plan to spend time on foot exploring the formations at your own pace.
Mineral springs in the area contain highly acidic water rich in elements like aluminum and iron that create unusual properties. One spring stands out with a striking red color caused by its mineral composition.
