The site began as a luxury guesthouse in the 1800s and grew into a Belle-Époque hotel that drew visitors from across Europe. The Giessbach Foundation rescued the building from demolition in 1983 and restored it to preserve its original character.

A funicular railway links the hotel to the lake and was built in 1891 with original switch rails that still operate today. This railway is among the oldest of its type in the world and shows how early Swiss engineers solved the challenge of moving people and goods down steep slopes.
