Planalp, Alpine settlement in Brienz, Switzerland
Planalp is a small alpine settlement on the southern side of Brienzer Rothorn at roughly 1341 meters high. The place offers views across Lake Brienz and the surrounding mountains of the central Alps.
The place is first mentioned in documents from 1306 and was founded by Walser settlers who came from the Valais region. Evidence suggests that people used this location seasonally as far back as late Roman times.
The name comes from 'Plan,' meaning flat ground, reflecting its position on a plateau high in the mountains. Visitors see traditional alpine chalets and experience the simple way of life that mountain dwellers maintain here.
The rack railway from Lake Brienz stops at Planalp from May to October, with extended service in November depending on weather conditions. The place is not reachable by car, so the railway is the only way for visitors to arrive.
The mountain lodge operates without electricity, using gas for cooking and candlelight for evening meals. This basic way of living makes staying here a surprisingly simple experience that many visitors find memorable.
