Axalp

Axalp is a ski resort and mountain pasture in the Bernese Alps with slopes ranging from 1535 to 1811 meters in elevation. The terrain spreads across several kilometers and offers runs for different skill levels.

The mountain pastures here were farmed as early as the Bronze Age, when Celtic inhabitants named the area as a term for grazing land. This agricultural use has shaped the region ever since.

Three traditional alpine cooperatives manage grazing lands here following time-honored methods and produce Mutschli cheese, a local variety tied to the rhythm of mountain dairy farming.

The resort is about 35 minutes from Brienz by PostBus or private vehicle, with the Axalp-Windegg cable car providing access to the slopes. Planning your visit around regular transport schedules helps ensure smooth arrival.

Each year the Swiss Air Force conducts live training exercises at the Axalp-Ebenfluh shooting range, where fighter jets operate in real conditions. These aerial displays form part of the annual calendar and can be observed from the surrounding area.
