House of Photography in Marrakech

The House of Photography occupies a restored traditional merchant building in the historic center of Marrakesh and displays photographic works from 1870 to 1960. The collection includes glass plates, silver prints, and rare photographs that document different aspects of the country.

The collection began in 2009 with several thousand photographs and grew to around 10,000 documents over time. It includes works by photographers such as George Washington Wilson and Marcelin Flandrin who documented Morocco in the 19th century.

The exhibitions show photographs of Moroccan daily life, Berber communities, and traditional crafts through rare prints and glass plates on display. As you walk through the rooms, you see how people and landscapes looked in earlier times.

The building is located in the heart of the Medina and is accessible on foot, but the narrow streets can be confusing, so it helps to ask for directions or have a map. The exhibition changes every six months, so what is on display may differ depending on when you visit.

Inside the museum operates a working workshop where historical photographs are reprinted in high-quality reproductions. Visitors can purchase these handcrafted prints and take home an authentic souvenir while supporting the printing process.
