Heroes Monument

The Heroes Monument is a war memorial in Alon-Alon Contong, Surabaya, Indonesia, rising over 40 meters into the air. The pillar carries engraved symbols from Javanese culture and stands on a base surrounded by a low gateway.

The pillar was built on the site where fighting took place in November 1945 between Indonesian resistance fighters and allied troops. The building of the Dutch High Court from the colonial era stood here before.

The pillar takes its name from the city defenders during the Indonesian independence struggle. Visitors can enter the exhibition rooms beneath the structure and see documents and relics from the time of the fighting.

The site sits centrally in the city and is easy to reach by public transport. Access to the museum under the monument requires a small entrance fee, and the grounds are open during the day.

Four murals at the base show scenes from the Battle of Surabaya in 1945. The depictions were created by local artists and show the different phases of the fighting in the city.
