Agiofaraggo Martsalo Kefali, Natural gorge and beach in southern Crete, Greece
Agiofarago is a natural gorge on the southern coast of Crete that cuts through limestone cliffs and opens to a pebbled beach with clear water. The passage through the gorge reveals rock formations and natural cavities along both sides.
The gorge became a refuge for monks from a nearby monastery starting in the 14th century, who converted the caves into living spaces. This spiritual presence shaped the site for centuries.
The small church dedicated to Saint Anthony sits within the gorge and shows how religious communities made use of this isolated location. The well inside tells of generations who came here to collect water and pray.
Access is possible either by hiking for about an hour or taking a boat from nearby towns. Visitors should bring water and wear proper footwear for navigating stones and natural passages.
A stone arch on the western side creates an underwater tunnel that swimmers can explore. This formation is fully accessible only under certain water conditions.
