Trail to the Agiofarago Beach, Beach trail in southern Crete, Greece

The path leads through a natural canyon with high rock walls, ending at a beach with crystal waters and a mix of sand and pebbles.

The canyon served as a significant ascetic center in early Christian times, with three hundred hermits living in caves along its limestone walls.

Saint Anthony's Church stands as a religious landmark on the route, marking the spot where ancient hermits gathered for their annual meetings.

Access requires a 20-minute walk from the parking area through the canyon, with no facilities available except for a water well near the church.

A natural stone arch formation in the sea allows swimmers to pass underneath while exploring the coastal waters.

Off-the-beaten-track sites in Crete: Venetian fortresses, limestone gorges, and mountain villages

This selection highlights Crete locations away from common routes. It includes historic sites such as the Venetian fortress of Spinalonga, occupied by a leper colony until 1957, and the ruins of the Minoan palace of Kato Zakros on the eastern coast. Notable geological formations include the Kourtaliotiko gorges with 600-meter limestone walls, the Aradena bridge suspended 138 meters above the void, and the Dikteon cave, extending over two kilometers into Mount Dikte. Nature enthusiasts can explore the small bay of Seitan Limania between its white cliffs, the Argiroupoli springs bursting amidst Roman ruins, or take trails through the Theriso gorges. These destinations offer a different view of Crete, away from the tourist crowds along the northern coastline.
