Frioul archipelago, Rocky archipelago in Mediterranean Sea, France

The archipelago consists of four main islands: Pomègues, Ratonneau, If, and Tiboulen, covering a total area of 200 hectares near Marseille.

In 1516, King Francis I of France ordered the construction of a fortress on the island of If, which later became a high-security prison.

The Château d'If gained international recognition through Alexandre Dumas's novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo', which features the fortress as its primary setting.

Visitors can access the archipelago via regular ferry service from Marseille's Vieux-Port, with boats departing throughout the year to the islands.

Saint Estève beach on Ratonneau island features an underwater trail marked by five buoys for exploring Mediterranean marine life.
