Grotte de la Barre Mangin

Grotte de la Barre Mangin is a cave entrance in the Chartreuse mountains located at approximately 1300 meters in elevation. The opening emerges prominently from the limestone rock face and remains visible from surrounding hiking trails.

The cave opening formed approximately 400,000 years ago through a massive rock collapse that reshaped the mountain ridge between Rochers de l'Église and Rochers de Chalves. This geological event created the entrance structure visible today.

The entrance takes its name from a local blacksmith whose family lived in this mountain region for generations. Today it serves as a meaningful landmark that connects visitors to the area's human history.

Reaching this entrance requires stamina and preparation since access involves a steep mountain climb through challenging terrain. Start early in the day and bring plenty of water along with proper hiking boots.

The entrance shelters chamois and several bat species that thrive in the cool mountain environment. Despite its relatively shallow depth, the size of the portal impresses visitors who spot it from above.
