Grotte de la Barre Mangin

The entrance to Grotte de la Barre Mangin features a wide opening in the limestone rock face, located at an elevation of 1300 meters in the Chartreuse mountains.

The cave formation originated from a significant rock collapse that occurred 400,000 years ago, affecting the mountain ridge between Rochers de l'Église and Rochers de Chalves.

Local geologists and cavers frequent this natural formation to study the geological composition of the Chartreuse mountain range and document native wildlife species.

Reaching the cave requires a challenging 8-kilometer hike with an 860-meter elevation gain, starting from Pont du Gua, with the final approach through a beech forest.

The cave serves as a natural shelter for chamois and bats, featuring a shallow depth but a notably large entrance portal visible from the surrounding hiking trails.
