Charmant Som, Mountain summit in Chartreuse Range, France
Charmant Som is a limestone peak in the Chartreuse Range that rises to about 1867 meters near Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. The summit offers sweeping views across the surrounding Alps and the valleys below.
The mountain became central to Alpine pasture farming as shepherds established traditional routes to high meadows over generations. These old paths form part of the Grande Randonnée hiking route used today.
The summit remains connected to Alpine pastures where cheesemaking follows regional traditions that have endured for centuries. Visitors can experience how the mountain and local craftsmanship are deeply intertwined.
A well-marked trail leads from the lodge parking area to the summit and takes about 90 minutes to complete. The terrain requires decent fitness, but the route is suitable for hikers with moderate experience.
This is the last location in Isère where cheese is made directly on a mountain summit, a practice that has nearly disappeared elsewhere. Visitors can purchase fresh cheese directly from the herders who produce it daily.
