Musée Arcabas en Chartreuse, Contemporary sacred art museum in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, France.
The Musée Arcabas en Chartreuse is a contemporary sacred art museum housed in a 19th-century church building. The space displays paintings, stained glass, sculptures, and furnishings all created or designed by artist Jean-Marie Pirot, known as Arcabas.
Jean-Marie Pirot began in 1953 at age 25 with a long-term artistic project to reshape the church interior. He worked for over three decades creating three overlapping bands of paintings featuring red and gold tones throughout the space.
The displayed religious artworks span multiple materials including linen, silk, and wall hangings created by the artist. Visitors encounter decorated vestments and painted garments that fill the space with handmade details.
Visitors should know the space is open daily except Tuesdays and entry is free of charge. Parking areas for cars and buses are available on site, making the visit easy to access.
The walls display three layers of paintings blending abstract and figurative elements, surrounded by decorated flooring and carved furnishings. This multi-layered structure creates a visually complex experience that becomes clearer as you move through the space.
