Chanticleer Garden, Botanical garden in Radnor Township, Pennsylvania, United States
Chanticleer Garden is a botanical garden in Radnor Township, Pennsylvania, spanning approximately 48 acres with multiple themed sections including Asian Woods, Pond Garden, and Tennis Court Garden. The property holds extensive plant collections representing different landscape styles and natural habitats throughout its grounds.
The estate was built in 1912 for Christine Penrose and Adolph Rosengarten Sr. and remained private for decades before opening to the public. Its transformation into a public garden occurred in 1993 when the family's foundation made it accessible to visitors.
Different garden sections display specific planting styles, ranging from formal European designs to naturalistic landscapes inspired by Asian gardens with species from Korea, Japan, and China. Visitors can observe how these contrasting approaches coexist and create distinct atmospheres throughout the property.
The grounds are accessible during daylight hours and can be explored on foot, with sturdy shoes recommended for the varied paths and terrain. Visitors should allow adequate time to walk through all garden sections and discover the different plant collections at a comfortable pace.
A circular pond from the 1970s reflects the surrounding trees and creates a quiet surface within the garden design. Near the natural area called Bell's Run stands a functioning waterwheel from the 1940s that still uses the stream's water flow.
