St. David's Episcopal Church
St. David's Episcopal Church, Episcopal church in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
The building displays Gothic Revival design with stone masonry, pointed arch windows, and a bell tower. The grounds include multiple worship spaces such as the main chapel and additional meeting rooms, along with a historic cemetery featuring markers dating to the 18th century amid landscaped lawns and a botanical tree collection.
The first recorded worship service on the site occurred in 1680 when Welsh settlers from Pennsylvania erected a wooden chapel. The current structure's foundation stone was laid in 1715, and during the War of Independence, the property hosted troops from both armies. Renovations during the 19th and 20th centuries expanded the complex with additional structures.
The congregation preserves ties to Welsh colonial heritage through its dedication to David of Wales, whose feast day on March 1 is celebrated with special services. The parish serves as a spiritual center for residents of Wayne and neighboring communities, continuing a tradition of worship and community engagement spanning more than three centuries.
The cemetery remains open year-round and features informational markers about notable figures from the colonial and revolutionary periods, including General Anthony Wayne's burial site. Sunday services welcome visitors, and the facilities are available for private events by advance arrangement. Parking is provided on the property.
The arboretum established during the 1940s through John Newbold Family support and parish volunteers contains more than 100 tree species from various continents, including rare specimens such as Japanese zelkova and several maple varieties grouped by taxonomic classification with identification labels.
