Wayne, Residential community in Delaware County, Pennsylvania
Wayne is a residential settlement in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, that stretches across several township boundaries along the former Pennsylvania Railroad line. Three SEPTA stations link the area to Philadelphia and other suburbs.
Settlement began in the 1880s when banker J.H. Askin built a mansion called Louella. Financier A.J. Drexel later purchased surrounding land and encouraged development in the area.
The Wayne Art Center organizes a landscape painting festival in May and displays an international craft show during winter months. Along Lancaster Avenue, restaurants and small shops draw residents from surrounding neighborhoods.
The area has three rail stations along the commuter line to Philadelphia, so visitors can easily move between stops. Shops and restaurants sit mainly near the junction of Lancaster Avenue and Wayne Avenue.
The Downtown Wayne Historic District preserves several old buildings, including the Wayne Hotel at the main crossroads. This corner is also called Restaurant Row because several dining places sit side by side there.
