Grand Aquarium de Touraine, Public aquarium in Lussault-sur-Loire, France
The Grand Aquarium de Touraine is a large facility in Lussault-sur-Loire with 70 tanks displaying multiple fish species. The layout guides visitors through different water environments, showcasing life from rivers and tropical regions.
The facility opened in 1994, following the Tropical Aquarium of Touraine which had been located at Tours Castle since 1984. The move to the new riverside location allowed for expansion and improved ways to present the collection.
The aquarium displays Loire River species alongside tropical fish, which visitors experience directly while walking between tanks. This mix shows both regional and exotic water worlds, making the connection between local and distant ecosystems visible.
The aquarium is situated between Tours and Amboise, making it accessible from both towns. Plan for at least 2-3 hours to explore everything thoroughly, especially if you want to take time in the viewing tunnel.
The facility houses Europe's largest freshwater tunnel, allowing visitors to walk beneath the water and see fish swimming overhead. This 30-meter passage offers an unusual view of underwater life and how the species move through their environment.
