Parco Cava d'Ispica is an archaeological site and nature park near Modica, in southeastern Sicily. The valley cuts through rocky cliffs filled with ancient tombs, cave dwellings, and small chapels carved directly into the stone.
The valley has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with successive groups leaving tombs, chapels, and cave homes carved into the rock. After a destructive earthquake in the 17th century, many inhabitants abandoned the site and moved to nearby towns.
Sturdy shoes are recommended, as the paths are uneven and run through rocky terrain. The park entrance is well signed from Modica, and the route can be walked at a relaxed pace.
Deep in the valley, the Grotta della Larderia is a cave that served both as a human shelter and as a place to keep animals. Not far from it, the church of Santa Maria is carved entirely into the rock and can be entered by visitors today.
