Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo
The Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo is a wine route in the Evora region with over 60 wineries spread across flat countryside with red earth and old stone buildings. Visitors can walk from winery to winery, tour the vineyards and cellars, taste different local wines, and learn how they are made.
The route was founded in 1991, shortly after the creation of the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission, to promote the region's wines and producers worldwide. Some wineries have centuries-old histories and continue to contribute to local identity through their traditional craftsmanship today.
The route connects visitors with the daily lives of winemakers who have lived and worked here for generations. You can see people during harvest or packaging, working with care and attention, showing that wine here is more than just a product.
Visits should be arranged in advance as there are specific opening hours: weekdays morning and afternoon, Saturdays with a lunch break, closed Sundays and holidays. An information center in Evora provides maps, information, and booking options for winery visits.
Some wineries offer hot air balloon rides that provide a unique view of the hills, fields, and plantations of the Alentejo region. This experience shows the landscape from a new height and is an unusual way to explore the wine-growing area.
