Akkaya Travertenleri, Natural travertine formation in Bolu Merkez, Turkey

Akkaya Travertenleri is a natural travertine formation in Bolu Merkez, Turkey, made up of layered white and light beige terraces arranged like wide steps with warm mineral pools between them. The water rises from underground and is carbonated and mineral-rich, depositing calcite as it cools and slowly building up the terraces over time.

The terraces formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich water pushed up through cracks in the ground and cooled at the surface. Each layer of calcite built on the last, slowly shaping the stepped landscape visible today.

The warm mineral water is locally believed to be good for the skin and muscles, and visitors often dip their feet in the pools or sit quietly at the edge. This habit gives the place a slow, restful rhythm that feels very much part of everyday life here.

The site is near the village of Çepni, southwest of Bolu, and is easy to reach by car on roads that are well marked, with parking available close to the entrance. Wearing comfortable shoes is a good idea, since some of the paths around the terraces can be uneven, and bringing water and sun protection is recommended on warm days.

Akkaya Travertenleri is sometimes compared to Pamukkale but sits largely off the main tourist trail, so the pools here tend to be far less crowded. The water contains natural carbon dioxide, which can be felt as a faint tingling on the skin when you step in.
