Lake Abant, Natural lake in Mudurnu, Turkey.
Lake Abant is a natural body of water in Mudurnu surrounded by dense forests of pine, oak, and beech trees at an elevation of 1350 meters. The water covers about 127 hectares and forms a large open basin with forested shorelines on all sides.
The lake formed naturally through a landslide and gained protected status as a natural park in 1988. It became Turkey's 48th national park in 2022.
Local restaurants near the shore prepare traditional dishes with freshly caught Abant trout, a species native to these waters. The dish represents an important part of regional food culture and shows how the lake shapes daily life in the area.
A path of about 7 kilometers circles the entire shore, making it accessible for walking, cycling, and horse riding in all seasons. The route allows visitors to move at their own pace and explore the surroundings at different levels of activity.
The lake is home to several species found nowhere else, including the Abant Crocus flower, Little Scalloped Salamander, and Abant Hazel Mouse. These rare creatures are tied to the specific conditions of the water and forests here.
