The building began as a private residence for the Ingham-Whitaker family in 1874 and became a luxury hotel in 1907 under architect Ernesto Basile's design. This transformation established it as one of Palermo's principal hotels.

The original residence was connected to the neighboring Anglican church through a concealed passage, suggesting a past architectural and social connection. This hidden link was not carried forward in the later hotel design.
