Trittkopfbahn, Cable car in Lech, Austria
The Trittkopfbahn is a two-section aerial lift that carries passengers from Zürs through the Ochsenboden middle station up to the Trittkopf summit. The system rises from a lower valley location to high alpine terrain, serving skiers and hikers throughout the year.
The original lift opened on December 24, 1962, with Austrian Chancellor Alfons Gorbach attending the inaugural ceremony. A major reconstruction in 2016 transformed it into a modern two-section aerial system with new cabins and technology.
The lift connects two mountain villages within the Ski Arlberg area and serves locals and visitors daily as essential transportation. It represents how mountain communities rely on these systems to maintain connections across the high altitude terrain.
The ride starts at the valley station and continues through a middle stop before reaching the summit station at higher elevation. Wear layers and check operating conditions in bad weather, as mountain lifts may close during strong winds or storms.
The 2016 redesign features a clever split system where some cabins exit at the middle station and return downward while others continue upward to the summit. This arrangement optimizes passenger flow and gives visitors choices about how far they want to climb.
