Moulin des Aigremonts, Cave windmill in Bléré, France
The Moulin des Aigremonts is a windmill in Bléré with multiple underground levels containing millstones and machinery for processing grain. The restored equipment demonstrates how grain was refined into different grades of flour.
The mill was built in 1848 and operated as a working mill until 1877, after which it fell into disuse. The city of Bléré purchased it in 2003 and undertook major restoration work.
Local millers guide visitors through the underground chambers and demonstrate how grain was processed using time-honored methods. You see the tools and techniques that were essential to rural life and flour production in this region.
Visitors should note that the underground levels are accessed via stairs and the temperature can be cool inside. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and allow sufficient time to explore the site properly.
The massereau section contains specialized equipment for fine adjustment of the spacing between millstones. This feature allowed millers to precisely control flour consistency and produce multiple varieties.
