Canonica, Italian restaurant in Trastevere, Rome, Italy.
Canonica is an Italian restaurant in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, set inside a historic building a short walk from the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The dining room has wooden beams on the ceiling and tiled floors, and the kitchen focuses on traditional Roman and Italian dishes made with seasonal produce.
The building that houses the restaurant was originally part of the church complex next door, used as lodging for clergy. Over time it was converted for civilian use, and the restaurant has taken over the space while keeping the original structure largely intact.
The name Canonica refers to the type of building it occupies, a former clergy residence attached to a church. Sitting just off the main square of Trastevere, the restaurant shares its walls with centuries of neighborhood life that visitors can sense in the worn stone and brick around them.
The restaurant has outdoor tables on the square out front, which fills up on warm evenings, so arriving early or booking ahead is a good idea. The space is accessible from street level and the surrounding lanes are narrow, so it is easiest to reach on foot.
Although the restaurant sits in one of the most visited parts of Rome, a small interior courtyard at the back of the building stays much quieter than the busy square out front. Getting a table there gives a very different experience from what most visitors expect in this part of the city.
