Mining Tourism Amatistas, Amethyst mines in Artigas, Uruguay

Mining Tourism Amatistas is a mining complex in Artigas with underground tunnels containing geodes filled with purple amethyst crystals embedded in volcanic rock. The crystal formations grow inside hollow chambers, creating geometric patterns across the stone walls.

Mining operations began in the early 20th century after geological surveys discovered amethyst deposits in the region. The crystals themselves formed roughly 130 million years ago deep within volcanic rock layers.

Mining here is more than just business—it is a tradition passed down through generations of local workers. They know how to extract the crystals while respecting the natural formations and the landscape around them.

Tours require advance reservations and depart regularly throughout the week. The site is located away from main roads, so plan for your own transportation or arrange pickup from your hotel.

Visitors can actively participate in the extraction process and keep small crystals they find during exploration. This hands-on experience gives insight into how workers uncover these formations day after day.
