Mining Tourism Amatistas, Amethyst mines in Artigas, Uruguay
The extensive mining complex contains underground tunnels filled with geodes, displaying formations of purple amethyst crystals emerging from volcanic rock walls.
The mining operations in Artigas began in the early 20th century when geological surveys revealed deposits of amethyst crystals dating back 130 million years.
Mining techniques passed through generations of local workers contribute to the extraction of gemstones while maintaining the geological integrity of the formations.
Tours depart twice daily from Hotel Casino San Eugenio, requiring advance reservations and personal transportation for the 60-kilometer journey to the mining site.
Visitors can participate in the extraction process and keep small gemstones found during their guided underground exploration of the temperature-controlled tunnels.
