Yoshino Beach, Sand beach on Miyako Island, Japan

Yoshino Beach is a sand beach on Miyako Island in Okinawa, Japan, with shallow, calm water and a reef running close to the shore. The lagoon in front of the sand is wide and flat, making it easy to walk in and see fish and coral without going far out.

Miyako Island has long been home to communities that relied on the sea, and beaches like this one were part of everyday life long before visitors arrived. Tourism began to grow in the later part of the 20th century, gradually opening the island to travelers from across Japan and beyond.

Many visitors bring their own snorkeling gear to explore the reef just off the shore. It is common to spend the whole day here, arriving early for the quiet morning hours or staying to watch the light change over the water in the afternoon.

The beach sits a bit away from the main town on Miyako Island, so renting a car is the most practical way to get there. It helps to bring water and sun protection, as facilities directly on the sand are limited.

Miyako Island is made of coral rock rather than volcanic stone, and rainwater filters through the ground before reaching the sea. This is one reason the water here stays clear even after heavy rain.
