Fukuzato Underground Dam, Underground dam in Miyakojima, Japan
The Fukuzato Underground Dam extends 1,790 meters in length and reaches a depth of 27 meters beneath the limestone surface of Miyakojima Island.
Construction of the Fukuzato Underground Dam began in 1988 and concluded in 1998, marking a solution to water scarcity following severe droughts in 1971.
The Miyakojima Underground Dam Museum, established in 2013, presents the engineering methods and geological features that enable this water management system.
The dam stores 10.5 million cubic meters of fresh water, which reaches agricultural lands through 85 wells equipped with submersible pumps.
The dam structure prevents seawater infiltration while retaining fresh groundwater within the island's natural underground valleys formed by limestone and Shimajiri layers.
