Praia Grande de Pêra, Sand beach in Pêra, Portugal.
Praia Grande de Pêra is a sand beach on the Atlantic coast stretching about 2 kilometers and bordered by natural dunes and wetland areas. Wooden walkways provide easy access to the shore and guide visitors across the protected zones.
The beach remained a secluded area for many years and saw little development until recent decades. The construction of nearby resorts changed the surroundings, yet the natural character of the shore has been preserved.
The name Pêra comes from the Arabic period and reflects the long history of this coastal region. Visitors today can see traces of this heritage in the local architecture and traditional fishing villages nearby.
The beach has parking, restaurants, and restrooms, with lifeguards on duty from June through September. It is best to arrive early in the day, as the beach can become crowded during good weather.
At its eastern end, the beach connects to Lagoa dos Salgados, a natural area where various waterfowl species can be observed throughout the year. This wetland serves as an important refuge for birds and offers surprising opportunities for nature watching.
