Portage Lakefront, Sand beach at Lake Michigan coast, Portage, US
Portage Lakefront is a sandy beach along Lake Michigan featuring a paved walking path and a pavilion overlooking the water. The area includes restrooms, seasonal food service, and accessible amenities designed to welcome all visitors.
This location was transformed in 2008 from industrial settling ponds and a sewage treatment facility into a public beach. The National Park Service oversaw this transformation to return the land to the community for recreation.
This beach serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors connect with the lake and each other throughout the year. People come to relax by the water, spend time with friends and family, or simply watch the shoreline change with the seasons.
Three parking areas provide access to the beach, which is open from early morning to evening throughout the year. The paved paths are flat and easy to walk, making the space welcoming for people with limited mobility.
The beach provides specialized mats during warm months that allow wheelchair users to roll directly to the water's edge. This accessibility feature enables visitors with disabilities to experience the lake directly and independently.
