Plum Island Beach, Sand beach in Newburyport, United States
Plum Island Beach is a sand beach stretching across a 11-mile barrier island between the Merrimack River and the Atlantic Ocean. The shoreline features soft sand and natural dunes that line the entire length of the island.
A fortification called Fort Philip was built here during the American Revolutionary War to protect the Merrimack River from naval attacks. This defensive structure played a role in guarding this strategic stretch of coast.
The beach takes its name from wild beach plum shrubs that grow naturally across the sand dunes along this stretch of coast. These plants shape how the shoreline looks and are woven into the local environment.
The Plum Island Point parking area provides space for roughly 150 vehicles with different fee rates for local residents and visitors from outside the area. It is wise to arrive early during warmer months to secure a spot.
The sand contains tiny crystals of pink pyrope garnet that create a purple shimmer in certain sections during high tide. This rare mineral gives the shore a distinctive appearance and draws the attention of collectors.
