Musée du Papier, Paper museum in Angoulême, France
The Musée du Papier occupies a former factory building constructed as a bridge spanning the Charente River and connecting two riverbanks. The spaces retain the machines and equipment that once served paper manufacturing.
The building was constructed in the 19th century as the Lacroix paper mill and was later converted to the Joseph-Bardou Le Nil facility. Its closure in 1972 marked the end of a long tradition of paper manufacturing at this location.
The exhibits showcase paper manufacturing through machinery, tools, and materials that remain visible in the former factory spaces. These objects tell the story of the workers who spent their lives in this trade.
Plan your visit for the afternoon, as opening begins in early afternoon hours. Guided tours can be reserved to learn more about the machinery and work processes in detail.
The building incorporates water channels that demonstrate how river power drove the machinery. These hydraulic systems remain visible today and showcase the engineering skill of the 19th century.
