Muhanga Prison is a detention facility located in the Southern Province of Rwanda, specifically in the Shyogwe sector of Muhanga District, housing approximately 6,441 inmates across multiple blocks and serving as a key correctional institution in the country.
Established in 1973 with an original capacity of 750 inmates, the prison expanded significantly after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, increasing its capacity to around 3,500 by 1995 with the addition of Nsinda gate and three hangars to accommodate genocide-related detainees.
The facility features several chapels constructed in 1987 where inmates participate in religious activities and receive family visits, promoting spiritual well-being and maintaining connections with the community during incarceration.
