Vestmanna, Coastal municipality on Streymoy island, Faroe Islands
Vestmanna is a municipality on the northwestern coast of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands. The settlement spreads along the natural harbor between steep mountains rising up to 639 meters (2,095 ft), protected from storms by Vágar island to the west.
Irish monks known as Westmen established the first settlement in this natural harbor during the 11th century. The town's name derives from these early inhabitants who built a lasting community in this location.
The Wax Museum of Vikings displays maritime traditions that continue to shape daily life today. The local sports club VÍF, founded in 1939, embodies this connection to the community.
The nearest airport at Vágar is about 30 minutes away by car for convenient access. Regular boat tours depart from the harbor to explore the striking cliffs nearby, best viewed from the water.
Four mountain reservoirs collect rainwater that flows through pipes down to turbines, generating power for many Faroese households. This hydroelectric system takes advantage of the steep terrain and heavy rainfall of the island landscape.
