Funningur, Mountain village in Eysturoy, Faroe Islands
Funningur is a village on the northwestern coast of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands, nestled along a small bay. Several mountains surround the settlement and create dramatic natural walls around it.
The settlement functioned as an independent municipality until 2009, when it was incorporated into the larger administrative unit of Runavíkar kommuna. This merger changed the administrative structure but not the local community itself.
The wooden church built in 1847 reflects traditional Faroese building methods with its characteristic grass-covered roof and waterside setting. It remains a focal point that shapes how locals and visitors experience the village.
The village is small and compact, making it easy to explore on foot and to access the waterfront areas directly. Houses are clustered around the bay, so orientation is straightforward.
The settlement sits nestled between several mountain peaks including Middagsfjall, Gráfelli, Vaðhorn, Blámansfjall, and Húsafjall. These surrounding heights create a natural enclosure that shelters the village.
