Lake Tenggano, Largest inland lake in the South Pacific, Rennell Island, Solomon Islands
Lake Tenggano is the largest inland body of water in the South Pacific, stretching across Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands. The lake contains brackish water and is studded with limestone islands scattered across its surface.
Both Japanese and American military forces built bases for flying boats here during World War II. The remains of these military operations still rest on the lake floor today.
The four villages around the lake are central to the daily life of local people, who have fished and farmed here for generations. The water remains at the heart of how residents work, move, and sustain themselves year-round.
The lake is accessible through four villages dotting its shoreline, which serve as good starting points for a visit. The driest months offer the best conditions for getting around and exploring the area.
The water is home to over 300 species of algae and diatoms, with several found nowhere else in the world. These microscopic organisms make the ecosystem unusually rare and valuable.
