Mercado Central

Mercado Central is an underground marketplace in Zona 1 that spreads across multiple levels and houses hundreds of stalls. Fresh produce, fabrics, and handmade goods are sold here by vendors from different parts of the country.

The building was originally constructed in 1869 as Cerna Market and had to be rebuilt following earthquakes in 1917 and 1976. After reconstruction, it reopened in 1983 and has served as a major trading hub ever since.

The market serves as a gathering place for artisans from across the country, where you can see woven textiles, carved objects, and jewelry made by local craftspeople. Visitors can watch how these handmaking traditions stay alive in this active trading space.

The market is easy to find, located right behind the Metropolitan Cathedral and accessible on foot. The best time to shop is early morning, when the selection is widest and there is less crowding.

In the basement level, you will find numerous food stalls offering traditional Guatemalan dishes at very low prices. These hearty, complete meals are equally popular with local workers and visitors.
