Signal du Palet, Mountain peak in Savoie, France
Signal du Palet is a mountain peak in the French Alps at 2,691 meters elevation in the Vanoise National Park area. From the summit, you can see across multiple valleys and neighboring ridges that stretch across the landscape.
This peak served as a landmark for shepherds from the 18th century onward as they moved their herds through alpine pastures. It was a key reference point for the traditional way of life in these mountains.
Local mountaineers gather annually at Signal du Palet to commemorate the first documented ascent and share stories of alpine traditions.
The climb takes roughly four hours from the Tignes ski resort parking area, where marked trails begin. Proper footwear and plenty of water are important, especially because of the altitude and exposure to weather.
The summit contains rare rock formations that hold marine fossils from when this region lay beneath an ancient sea. These remains tell the story of how the landscape transformed over millions of years before becoming the alpine terrain we see today.
