ClubMed Hokkaido Tomamu, Mountain resort in Shimukappu, Japan
ClubMed Hokkaido Tomamu is a mountain resort in Shimukappu, a small village in central Hokkaido, Japan. The property sits within a forested mountain setting and offers several hundred rooms spread across its grounds.
The site had been used for winter tourism before Club Med took it over in 2018. That change brought a new style of international hospitality to this part of Hokkaido, which had until then seen mostly local visitors.
The resort's dining areas serve food from the surrounding region, including seafood caught in Hokkaido waters and beef raised on local farms. Sitting down for a meal here gives a real sense of what the island's food culture looks and tastes like.
The nearest train stop is JR Tomamu Station, and the resort is a short ride from there. Travelers arriving by plane should count on a journey of over an hour from the nearest major airport.
On the property stands the Unkai Terrace, reached by gondola at about 3,570 feet (1,088 meters) above sea level. On clear mornings, a layer of cloud sits below the terrace, so visitors look down onto the tops of the clouds rather than up at them.
