Belvedere Garden, Baroque garden complex in Vienna, Austria
Belvedere Garden is a baroque garden complex in Landstraße, Vienna, Austria. It spreads across three terraces with geometric flower beds, fountains and low boxwood hedges linking both palace buildings.
Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned the grounds from 1700 onward as part of his summer residence outside the city walls. French garden designer Dominique Girard shaped the terraces following the model of major French gardens.
Visitors see the French influence in the water basins and trimmed hedges that give the grounds a clear order. The lawns remain open so people walking through can follow the sight lines between the two palaces.
Access is free daily from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM, with broad paths and benches along the main axis. The middle terrace offers a level area for resting, while the upper and lower levels are reached by stairs.
A large reflecting pool in front of the Upper palace mirrors the entire facade and doubles the impression of the building. This reflection shifts with the time of day and weather, making each visit a different experience.
