Ancien Canal du Verdon, Historical canal and hiking trail in Jouques, France

The Ancien Canal du Verdon extends 82 kilometers through Provence, featuring underground passages, aqueducts, and sections carved into cliff faces along its route.

The canal, constructed between 1866 and 1875 by 500 laborers, transported water from the Verdon River to Aix-en-Provence until its closure in the 1970s.

The engineering achievement earned recognition at the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition and 1880 Melbourne Exhibition for its technical innovations in water management.

The hiking path includes 3.3 kilometers of secured sections with walls, observation points, stairs, and handrails for visitor safety.

The canal tunnels now function as shelters for multiple bat species, combining historical infrastructure with natural habitat conservation.
