Château de La Verdière, Medieval fortress in La Verdière, France.
Château de La Verdière is a fortress with towers, terraces, and multiple levels located in the Provençal village of La Verdière. Its interior contains large rooms decorated with elaborate plasterwork and wall ornaments from different periods.
The fortress was founded around 980 by the Castellane family and once guarded the trade route from Arles toward the Alpine regions. It came under the control of the Forbin counts in 1613, who later expanded it with more comfortable living spaces.
The castle displays layers of different architectural styles from medieval times to the 18th century, visible in how defense structures blend with living spaces and formal rooms.
The building requires climbing multiple staircases and navigating different levels, so sturdy footwear is essential. Visitors should plan enough time to explore the various rooms and terraces thoroughly.
After comprehensive restoration in 2003, the fortress was revived as the largest privately owned castle in Provence. The work preserved its historical features while enabling modern living within its walls.
