First documented in 1021 as property of Saint-Victoir monastery, the castle underwent major expansions between 1560 and 1580, including a great hall.
The castle structure reveals architectural elements from multiple periods, featuring 13th-century U-shaped building arrangements and Renaissance-era modifications.

Pierre Maurel, nicknamed Croesus of Provence, transformed the medieval fortress into a grand residence with 50 rooms and commissioned trompe-l'œil paintings.
