Moqui Caverns

Moqui Caverns is a series of connected chambers within a sandstone formation accessible through natural openings in the cliff face. The rooms display irregular walls and sandy floors illuminated by daylight from above.

The caverns formed in the 1970s when sandstone deposits were extracted as sand for local glass manufacturers. Mining operations shaped these connected chambers into their current form.

The site shares its name with the nearby Moqui Cave Museum, which exhibits Native American artifacts and fluorescent mineral collections.

Access comes through a short hiking path across open terrain with sandy ground and rock formations. Wear sturdy footwear and stay alert on uneven surfaces and near cliff edges.

Ceiling holes throughout the chamber create light beams that shift across the sandy floor as the day progresses. This interplay of light and shadow changes with the hour and season.
