Samaria National Park

The Samaria Gorge stretches for 16 kilometers through limestone cliffs, connecting the Omalos plateau to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.

The protected area functioned as a refuge during conflicts throughout Greek history, with archaeological evidence of ancient settlements still visible along the gorge walls.

Traditional stone buildings in the former village of Samaria display the regional architectural methods, including the characteristic church of Saint Mary.

The national park operates daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM between May and October, with entrance fees collected at designated checkpoints along the trail.

The narrowest section of the gorge, known as the Gates, measures only four meters wide while the surrounding walls rise 300 meters above ground level.
