Morro do Cristo, Hill with monument and scenic viewpoint in Barra, Salvador, Brazil
Morro do Cristo is a grassy hill topped by a white Carrara marble Christ statue, located in the Barra neighborhood of Salvador, between Farol da Barra beach and Ondina beach. From the top, the view takes in the Bay of All Saints, the nearby lighthouse, and a long stretch of coastline.
The Christ statue was placed on the hill in December 1920 to mark the independence of the state of Bahia. It was carved by Italian sculptor Pasquale De Chirico, making it one of the oldest statues of its kind in the country.
The Christ statue on the hilltop faces the sea with open arms and is seen as a protective figure by sailors and locals passing along the coast. On weekends, residents and visitors gather on the grass around it, turning the spot into an informal meeting point with a relaxed and open feel.
The hill is on Avenida Oceânica in the Barra neighborhood, easily reached on foot from nearby accommodation, by bus, bicycle, or ride-share. A visit in the early morning or just before sunset tends to be quieter and offers the best light for the views.
The Christ statue on Morro do Cristo was put in place more than a decade before the famous one on Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. That makes this hill one of the first places in Brazil where a large Christ figure was erected overlooking the sea.
