Ratnagiri Monastery
Ratnagiri Monastery is an archaeological site with Buddhist monastery ruins in Jajpur district, Odisha. The remains include stone structures, carved statues, and votive stupas over 1500 years old that reflect different phases of Buddhist activity.
The monastery flourished from the 5th to 13th century as an important Buddhist center supported by rulers who provided land and resources. After its abandonment, Buddhist activity continued at the site until the 16th century, showing the region's lasting cultural impact.
This was a major center for Vajrayana Buddhism where monks and pilgrims gathered to pray and leave offerings at small votive stupas. The Sanskrit inscriptions found on these structures reveal how deeply spiritual practice shaped daily life at the site.
Wear comfortable shoes and visit during the day when light is good for exploring and the ruins are clearly visible. Walk carefully among the stones and respect the fragile remains to help preserve the site for future generations.
In December 2024, a giant Buddha head over 1.4 meters tall was excavated here, one of the largest ever found in India. This discovery alongside two more Buddha heads and meditation figures reveals the artistic skill of ancient craftsmen and the site's importance.
